Imagine no religion

WTNH Channel 8 from Connecticut is reporting that a sign posted by an atheist is sparking a controversy. Apparently someone made a sign that says “IMAGINE NO RELIGION” along with a picture of the twin towers that once stood in New York City, implying that mere existence of religion was the direct cause of 9/11.

Yeah, because world without Christianity would be so much better.

We won’t have music like Messiah, nor paintings of Sistine Chapel. Because we don’t need the modern university system that Christians started, nor the idea that every one should be educated not just the rich and powerful.

Because it wasn’t the Protestants who found this country and constitution had nothing to do with the Bible. Also, we don’t need the people like Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. who fought so hard for civil rights and who cares about President Lincoln who prayed and prayed to keep this country from falling apart.

We are so sure that without religion, we wouldn’t know how to hate, kill, destroy, start a war, or sin.

One commenter on this news summarized the absurdity of this poster very nicely:

I think it should be a picture of the twin towers, and the slogan should be “Imagine a world without airplanes.” Take that, aerospace engineers. [link]

great point, ur right without planes there would be no 9/11…the only diff. being that planes provide a usefull inarguable function to society, where the cost benefit analysis of religion in the year 2008 is quite arguable…and ur points really dont amount to much since of course great art and music was written and commisioned by the church, they had all the money…who are u to say that these people were INSPIRED to write or draw merely based on religion…and read the virginia statutes by jefferson regarding our constitution being based on the bible…then again, u know all the answers, why am i bothering…u cant talk reason to get someone to leave a position who didnt use reason to get into that position to begin with…

Thanks for the comment.

First of all, I never said that constitution was based on the bible.

Secondly, You picked and chose only parts of my argument. You neglected to comment on my reference to Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Lincoln. Even if I take out all the factors that you criticized, I still think I have a good case of religion serving the society towards good.

Next, If you feel that I don’t have the authority to say what the inspiration of their works were and what kind of position they held when it came to religion, I have nothing to say. (Although, from what I’ve read, Handel was very religious). Yet you assumed away my position, stating that I know all the answers and you can’t talk reason with me.

Finally, all I wanted state was that blaming religion as a whole for the crimes of 9/11 is absurd. Even if you believe religion serves no purpose in society. Maybe that idea came off little personal. But that’s because this is a personal blog not a discussion forum.

Thank you again for taking your time to reply to my blog post. And I’ll definitely check out Virginia Statutes.

If you wish to talk about this more, email me. Or just reply here. I want to believe that I, a religious person, can too reason.
