Science vs. God

It is not hard to find a voice proclaiming that God does not exist, especially in the scientific circle. Murray Gell-Mann, a nobel prize winning physicists, is one of those voice. You can watch his very interesting talk about self similarity in this physical universe. He goes on talking about how science finds new thing about the physical law of this universe. But instead of those new ideas being totally different but it’s very similar to laws that we already know. He calls in onion peeling.

Funny thing is he ends the talk with the following conclusion:

You don’t need something more, to explain something more.

What he means is that you don’t need to create a super natural explanation, like God, to explain how universe operates. His claim is that science is enough. Well… I have a problem with that.

I agree that I don’t need God to explain how gravity works. But that’s not because I think God had nothing to do with gravity but instead God is not needed when studying gravity.

Scientific method of explaining the universe doesn’t require God as prerequisite. Why? It’s because that’s how scientific method was designed. That doesn’t mean God does not exist. Yet, scientists claim that God doesn’t exist because they can explain the universe using scientific method. I do not understand how they arrive to that kind of conclusion.

I guess it’s because they think reason why people believe in God is to explain why things work the way things do. They believe that the reason for belief supernatural is because we don’t understand how lightening works or how electro-magnetism works.

But that’s not why I believe.

The reason why I believe is simple. It’s because I’m lonely and weak.

No doctrine in this universe will ever explain why I have a empty spot in my heart despite the fact that I have loving family and supportive friends. There’s nothing that explains my tendency to inflict harm to myself by sleeping late, eating junk food, and being lazy.

My sinful nature and lonely existence only makes sense in the light of the Truth, the fact that I’m a sinner and I need God who loves me.

Atheist say that only the weak needs God. That God is only a crutch. Well… to a cripple like me, all I need is crutch, not science.

If you truly believe that a soul doesn’t need God because science doesn’t need God, I’m sorry. I guess you are a stronger person that I’ll ever be with out God.

As for me, I don’t need God to explain the science, but I need God for myself.
